Measurement and context

A field observation carries its time reference, location, instrument configuration and calibration record. These fields allow operators to compare measurements from different instruments and visits.

Collection and transmission

Collection should remain distinct from transmission. Station records retain the observation sequence when communication capacity changes, while power and storage limits remain explicit operating constraints.

Review and reuse

Processing should preserve the distinction between original measurements and derived results. A record without a known configuration is marked for review before it is used in an operational comparison.
